The date June 16, 1904, is widely celebrated as the most iconic day in world literature, marking Leopold Bloom’s journey through Dublin in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Precisely seventy-one years later, on June 16, 1975, I walked through Celje in a dressing gown I discovered in suitcases stored in our attic at home.

Why the day is famous is clear: James Joyce set the events of Ulysses on that day. Why Joyce chose this particular day is less certain. He never said why, and we can only speculate. Not much happened in the world on that day – at least in the Western world… /
